Google local, now mobile

by Pstonie (7 November 2005)

Google released its Local service for mobile devices today and I've had a chance to check it out. Of course, being in South Africa, or not being in the US, makes it that much less useful. I can't access road information, I can't see the closest zoom of satellite imagery and I can't find where Jimberton's Authentic Greengrocer and Knifery is.

That said, it's still pretty cool. You get the same scrolling speed from your mobile as you'd get from a browser. The only difference is the speed of your net connection. Not that it's downloading slowly either. It's strange, but it's satisfying to know that you can view small, low-res images of your country from a couple of thousand kilometers up.
